Preparing the Soil

Our sessions together will commence on February 1st, 2019 at 7am EST. This post helps you prepare for the work ahead.

  • 3-minute video OUTLINE of the course

  • how to set up the VIRTUAL SPACES where the course will unfold

  • how to set up the PHYSICAL SPACES for your daily meditation ritual

  • community INTRODUCTIONS, meeting members of the circle you’ve joined

Meditation is such a huge subject that it can be difficult to know where or how to begin. We will keep things simple, relatable and sequential, but without squeezing the vastness, nuance and power out of this profound practice. Whether you have come for healing, insights, transformation or all of the above, this course will give you practical and profound tools for reaching your personal goals.

We will be utilizing 2 online spaces + 1 additional technology. Here I will familiarize you with these and guide you through the simple process of creating accounts with 2 of them.

1. The Course Page:

You will maintain access to this page and its contents through May 31, 2019.

2. The Zoom Room:

I am the only person who can open and close the Zoom room. I will do so 10 minutes before a scheduled session begins (6:50am) and close it promptly at the end (time will vary through the month). You can join anytime in that window. The recording will go up in our current chapter of the Tending the Roots course page shortly thereafter.

I am the only person you will be able to see or hear in the video calls--on your end there will be no active camera and your audio will be muted by default. We can see that you are with us, but that's it. This means you are 100% free to come just as you are.

3. Disqus: This is the technology that makes our community discussions happen. Like the one that is unfolding below in the comments section!

If you don’t already have a Disqus account go here to sign up and create a simple profile. That way everyone in the community has a face and a name.

Once you have a Disqus account, come back here and post your introduction.

***As always, if you have trouble with any of this, just email me***

Your physical body, your meditation seat and your home sanctuary are the environments in which your meditation practice will take root. You will not regret spending a bit of time tending to these sacred spaces ahead of time!

In terms of the physical body, you know what to do. Get rest, eat well, exercise, drink lots of water, be kind to yourself. Let me know if you want help with this or any of the rest.

In terms of the meditation seat, play around with different postures, cushions and supports. Here’s a video about basic posture alignment points. As we move into the longer meditations over the course of the month, you will be glad you considered options for sitting.

Cultivate your meditation sanctuary—a particular space in your home where you will meditate every day. Ideally this space can be set aside especially for meditation, not also for work or sleep or storage or whatever. But if that’s not possible, breathe, be flexible and work with what you got! Spend some time cleaning it and beautifying it. Create an altar if that feels appropriate. Bring in photos or flowers or whatever will make that space special and inviting for you.

Please introduce yourself in the comments section below! Share anything at all that you think will interest the group.

For those who want prompts:

  • What is most important to you?

  • How do you think that meditation can help you align with whatever is most important?
